A Study on Perceived Family Support and Quality of Life of Elderly


Abstract
In modem society, the human average life span has been prolonged due to medical benefits and changes in society, and as a result, the population of elderly has shown a trend to rapid, world-wide increase. This trend has been evident in Korea also, since 1960. Nowadays, the elderly problem has emerged as social problem, we should have a growing interest to elderly in various fields.
The purpose of this study was to investigate family support and quality of life of elderly.
For this study, 154 elderly were accepted in Mokpo city and Gwangju city, from June 1 to June 14, 1993. The level of family support was measured using Family Support Questionnaire developed by Choi (1983), Cobb (1976), Kang (1985) and the level of quality of life was measured using QOL scale developed by No You-Ja.
The data was analyzed by SAS program to find out frequency, percentage, T-test, Pearson correlation coefficient and ANOVA.
The results of this study were as follows;
1. The mean score of family support was 39.70 (SD= 8.4212) and the mean score of quality of life was 102.58 (SD= 13.4499).
For each factor in the quality of life scale, the mean scores were as follows: for emotional state, 20.19 (SD= 4.7200), for economic state, 19.88 (SD= 3.5368), for self esteem, 21.95 (SD= 4.9061), for physical state and function, 18.51 (SD= 4.5636), for family and neighbors relationship, 22.05 (SD= 3.8294).
2. The relationship between family support and quality of life showed very highly correlation (r= .5829, p < .001).
3. General characteristics were related to the degree of family support; mate survival type (F= 1.75, P < .05), livelihood type (F= 3.49, P < .01).
